Street Legal Performance was founded in 1987 by a former drag racer, the delightfully named Ed Hamburger. Today Good price or no dice The Camaro is a rare SS upgraded by SLP. Let’s see if his price takes the cake.
Much like Rodney Dangerfield, Alfa Romeo owners tend to be disrespected. Owning an Alfa means you’re almost never asked to drive in the carpool, struggle to do so with a carpool crush, and get chased away by pregnant women who have to be rushed to hospital even if they are mad- coronation. This is all down to Alfa’s perceived reputation for unreliability and therefore the risk of getting stranded on the side of the road.
Won or not, this stigma is detrimental to demand and therefore to Alfa’s values. For example, yesterday’s vendor 1983 Alfa Romeo GTV6 asked $29,500 for what was advertised as a very well maintained car. The thing is, in this condition, Hagerty is only pricing the model at just $26,000. And, as everyone knows, Hagerty tends to round up on such ratings. All of this was not lost on the majority of you who gave the Alfa a scathing rebuke in the form of an 87% no-dice loss.
Now, one thing I need to clarify about yesterday’s GTV6 is that there was no difference in the ad as to engine displacement as I originally thought. While the ad stated “3.0 liter S cams” which referred to the updated cams themselves and not the engine displacement, which as the loot badge noted is 2.5 liters. Obviously I was confused by the description but I received the clarification in a friendly email from the son of the poster. Thank you Todd!
It could be construed that Camaro owners suffer in respect to respect as well. I mean, the general stereotype surrounding the car is of mullet-wearing, hair metal-listening Budweiser-swillers. That perception may change with today’s 2001 Chevy Camaro SS SLP, however, as it looks sinister rather than silly and portends threat as opposed to growing mule. Plus, there are all those S’s in the badge.
Some of that comes from Street Legal Performance (SLP), the Livonia, Michigan-based store that has sold faster parts for pony cars since the late 1980s. Founded by drag racer Ed Hamburger, the The company’s first SLP-branded car was a performance edition of the Pontiac Firebird. The company then branched out to include that other member of the F-Body family, the Camaro.
This one sports the SLP badging and dual exhaust, but as SLP cars could be optioned with a number of different updates, it’s hard to tell how deep in the checkbook this car originally went. Suffice it to say, it has the 327-hp LS1 V8 under its hood and a four-speed automatic backing it up. Other non-SLP options here include the T-roof and Super Sport badging. Luckily for the curious, SLP is still active and should be able to provide a full list of options if given the car’s VIN.
It might be worth it since the car appears to be in very good condition despite its age and 165,000 mile lifespan. It comes in black on black on even more black when the wheels are added to the equation. All this is complemented by a gold painted accent on the (functional) hood scoop. A photo under the hood would have been nice, but the seller doesn’t seem to have found this important detail. Maybe it was because they were taking pictures of the car in the middle of what appeared to be an intersection and had to move quickly.
On the other hand, there is obvious peppering on the nose (freeway miles?) and the headlight lenses are starting to yellow somewhat. These are fairly minor quibbles, but should be noted. We might also want to discuss factory alloys painted black. Should these have a glossy lip or does this proof wear in the finish from too many car washes?
Alright, I’m really looking for straws here thinking of something to avoid this car. I guess we could also point this out to the seller who doesn’t provide any sort of service history in the listing description. On the plus side, it comes with a title proper.
What could any of this mean to the non-stereotypical Camaro fan? The ad lists the price at $12,995, and now we’ll have to think about it. What are you saying? Do the Street Legal Performance mods (whatever they imply) make it a decent price for that old Camaro? Or, even with the SLP bits, would you tell the GTFO vendor to charge the same?
