Hagerty has a new video on his YouTube channel in which they interview car enthusiasts who share the stories of how they found their classic cars. This includes a Ford Fox Body Mustang fan whose family now collects a Toyota Supra with a Ford V8, a Ford Mustang Mach 1 with a supercharged Terminator Cobra engine, and many other classics.
A family that collects Japanese hotrods
This video introduces us to a family that collects Japanese hotrods. The father, Brian, is a former fox body keen. Brian’s plan was to restore a Ford Mustang with his son Gage after he turned 18. But when Gage turned 18, he told his dad he wanted a Toyota Supra.
So they bought a 1989 Toyota Supra on Craigslist for $6,000. The original owner paid $28,000 for it when it was new in 1989. The car has an upgraded turbo. The engine now produces 600 hp at the wheels, compared to 230 hp for a stock 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo.
Gage also has a second Supra, a 1987 model. This one has a Ford 302 cubic inch V8 engine mated to a Borg Warner T5 transmission. Another unique feature of this Supra is that it has wide fiberglass fenders. Gage’s plan is to add fuel injection and then use this car to drift.
Hagerty then meets Cameron who owns a Fourth generation Ford Mustang Mach 1. This car was in storage when Cameron purchased it. It came with a normally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 and a 5-speed manual transmission.
Cameron added the engine of an SVT Terminator Cobra and increased the boost to 16 lbs. Horsepower goes from 305 to 530 hp of the stock unit with the new engine and mods.
Next in the video is Zach with his 2003 Mercedes CLK 55 AMG coupe. This car came from the factory with a 5.5 liter V8 engine producing 400 hp. Mercedes only made around 1,500 units of this car each year of its production, with Zach’s car having around 153,000 miles on the clock.
Meet a Datsun afficianado
Hagerty then travels to Rock Hill, South Carolina to meet a man named Shaye who likes Datsuns. His first project was a S30 Datsun 240z which he has owned for 8 to 9 years. This car was literally a barn find hidden away on a farm. Shaye saw an ad on Craigslist from a kid selling it on behalf of his father who was also a Datsun collector.
Shaye bought this stock car and did all the work on it himself. This includes welding new floorboards and frame rails, changing the interior and adding racing seats. Shaye’s collection also includes a 1977 Datsun 810 that he found on a Facebook group dedicated to the Datsun 810 and Nissan Maxima. He paid $1,000 for it and all he needed was a new heater.
Shaye’s affection for Datsuns has now shifted to Nissans. He has a Nissan 240sx that has a turbocharged straight-six engine that replaced the stock 4-banger.
