Can you host a wedding in the state capital of South Dakota?

One of the happiest days of your life is getting married. As you walk down the aisle, say your vows, and hear the words, “I now pronounce you…!”

Some of the most stressful times in your life come when planning a wedding. Specifically, finding the perfect location for the ceremony. Event barns are now the most popular for large lavish events. Others may choose to say their I Do’s on the steps of the county courthouse.

There are some pretty cool historic buildings in South Dakota. Would you ever envision the state capital of South Dakota in Pierre? Yes, I know traveling to the center of the state can be a bit tricky, but you can’t beat the price. It’s free!

There is no charge for holding a wedding ceremony in the Capital Rotunda or Capital Grounds. It would be helpful if you go through the appropriate channels to book your date with the SD Administration Office.

After speaking with a state employee, I learned several restrictions. Wedding ceremonies may only take place in the Capital Rotunda, Boardroom, Visitor Center Observation Deck or Capital Grounds.

Weddings in the Capital Rotunda may not take place during the annual Christmas Tree Show which typically runs the week of Thanksgiving through New Years.

Thinking of a huge guest list? I hope they like standing. Seating in the State Capital is limited to ten (10) chairs. And it will cost you 50 cents per chair.
