Craigslist revenue rebounds; traffic decline continues

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Florida., February 8, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Craigslist revenue rebounded in 2021 due to buoyant labor market, but still down more than a third from pre-pandemic total $1 billion every year, a new report from the AIM group shows it.

Craigslist generated an estimate $660 million revenue last year, up 17% from 2020. Most of the growth came from a 30% increase in job postings and 75% increase in gig postings. But traffic fell to 277 million monthly visits in November, a third of its traffic peak in 2017.

The 27-year-old for-profit company, based in San Francisco, employs about 50 people. It charges for ads including jobs, gigs, automobiles, services, and items for sale. Most fees are low, from $3 at $75.

“A lot of people think Craigslist is gone or all of its ads are free,” said Peter M. Zollman of the AIM group. “But it’s still a powerhouse, and it’s in a close race with Avito in Russia as the world’s No. 1 site ranked by traffic.

“Even though its revenue has rebounded a bit, Craigslist isn’t what it used to be.”

AIM Group has estimated Craigslist revenue since 2003, when it was just $7 million. Its profit margins are projected at 70% to 80%.

The AIM Group Craigslist Report 2022, available for $595 at AIMGroup.comalso reviews the main competitors of Craigslist in the United States: Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, Nextdoor and OfferUp.

Craigslist revenue estimates are developed with an extensive manual tally of tens of thousands of listings. Buyers can receive comprehensive market-by-market spreadsheets showing category revenue and city/state totals for 2021 and 2020.
