Jennifer Lawrence will no longer play Elizabeth Holmes in Adam McKay’s ‘Bad Blood’ because Amanda Seyfried was ‘great’

Jennifer Lawrence gave up playing Elizabeth Holmes in Adam McKayis to come Bad bloodfollowing the success of Amanda Seyfriedthe performance of The stall.

The news was revealed by Kyle Buchanan, who Profiled Laurent for the New York Times. He wrote on Twitter: “Jennifer Lawrence will no longer star as Elizabeth Holmes in Adam McKay’s Bad blood, she said. She came to this conclusion after seeing Amanda Seyfried play Holmes in The stall: ‘I thought she was great. I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t need to do this again.’ She did it.'”

McKay’s film was first announced in 2016, but Hulu beat it to the punch, releasing its Holmes-centric drama series in March 2022, which went on to be nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards (winning one for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie or anthology for Seyfried).

Bad blood will be based on the non-fiction book of the same name by journalist John Carreyrou (played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach in the Hulu series) and adapted by game of thrones screenwriter and co-executive producer Vanessa Taylor, who also adapted the screenplays for Netflix Hillbilly Elegy and The School of Good and Evil.

Lawrence was last linked to the project in January 2022 when McKay said Initiated that she was actively working on her Holmes’ accent. When asked if she had “nailed the vocals”, he replied, “You know, I haven’t had it done for me yet. She said she was working there. She’s about to have a baby so I won’t bother her now but she was born to play this role. With the voice, she says she feels it. She is excited.

Whether it’s an act of self-awareness, acknowledgment of the audience’s true criminal fatigue (come on, two Candy Montgomery docudramas in a year???), or genuine admiration for another acting is still in question, but it seems like a solid career choice for Lawrence as she’s only just returned to acting after a brief hiatus caused by poor critical reception.

Since her return, she has starred in Netflix Don’t look up (also by McKay) and will lead Apple TV+ Pavementwho releases November 4 on the streamer. Given Holmes’ eccentric personality traits, Bad blood could have meant a return to Lawrence’s 2010s persona, which would have felt redundant after her rebranding and comments about resuming her career after she was “hijacked”.

Luckily, Lawrence Stans won’t have to cry too hard, as McKay’s film wasn’t the only project to come on his radar. The actor is currently filming the 2023 coming-of-age comedy No strong emotionsin which she stars opposite Andrew Barth Feldman as a woman who answers a Craigslist ad from a mother looking for someone to date her college-going son.
