‘Operation Give Birds’ helps feed 1,200 families in four eastern Iowa towns

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa Giving Crew held its sixth annual Give Birds operation today, expanding to four cities in eastern Iowa this year and providing more than a thousand meals Thanksgiving Day to those in need.

While the Thanksgiving meal program started out as a prank, it has become a true holiday tradition.

“So in 2017, a friend of ours put this information on Craigslist, saying he was going to give away turkeys at Thanksgiving time,” said Nick Dusil, president of the Iowa Giving Crew. “And we raised enough money to provide meals that year, and then we’ve been growing ever since.”

Noah Hargrafen, who volunteers with the Iowa Giving Crew, said, “We used to do it in Newbo, and it wasn’t super big. You give out meals and we thought that was a good thing, but we had no idea it was going to become all this big stuff. Noah Hargrafen, a volunteer, said. “Now that it’s here, it’s, oh it’s so awesome.”

“These Thanksgiving meals are, you know, $70 to $80 each. A lot of people have contacted us and said they just don’t have the money to pay for the meal, or they barely pay for the fuel to come here to pick up the meal,” Dusil said. “We just try to help wherever we can, so these meals will go a long way.”

“It’s a very valuable service, it helps everyone, it helps a lot of people,” said Bruce German, a meal recipient.

“The community continues to support organizations that help fill the gaps, and our community is stronger when we all get involved together and make things happen,” Dusil said.

“I think everyone can do a little something to help their community,” Hargrafen said. “It doesn’t have to be that big, but everyone is capable of doing good and helping their community. And it’s definitely worth it if you do.
