CTV News Vancouver reported that dozens of people in RVs, vans and cars are living out of their vehicles in a parking lot near one of the city’s beaches. People interviewed at Spanish banks earlier this month all cited sky-high rents and limited housing options as the main reason they moved.

However, the Vancouver Park Board said he risked tickets and being towed at his own expense if he continued to park overnight. Towing charges start at around $95 for a full-size car and $165 for a large truck or trailer. Additional charges are added depending on the distance traveled and the time the vehicle is impounded.

According, the average price of a bedroom in Vancouver rose to $2,590 in September, an increase of 20.2% over the same period last year.

According to the report, one thing that is impacting rental prices in Vancouver and beyond is an interest rate hike introduced in an attempt to curb inflation.

“Interest rate increases hurt property affordability and keep potential buyers in the rental market,” it read.

“Second, a softening property market, with expectations of further declines, is keeping potential buyers on the sidelines, waiting for the market to bottom out.”

Another rental site,, also reported that renters spend more than half of their monthly income on housing, paying “a shocking 51.37%” for housing. For housing to be considered affordable, the recommended income-to-rent ratio does not exceed 30%.
