Sydney Sweeney to star in Barbarella remake

Euphoria and The White Lotus‘Sydney Sweeney is a very busy actress and producer, and Sony in particular is looking forward to working with her. She’s now on board to produce and star in a remake of the cult 1960s sci-fi Barbarelle.

The 1968 original by Roger Vadim (adapted from the controversial erotic comics by French author Jean-Claude Forest) features the title character of Jane Fonda, a 41st century astronaut who sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose positronic ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy.

Suffice it to say, there’s a lot of camp, sexual weirdness and we’re already wondering how that will translate to modern audiences and what changes will be needed. It will be the task of whoever signs up to write and/or direct.

Various versions have been attempted over the past two decades, including one that was to star Drew Barrymore and a television adaptation that saw veteran Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade and iconoclastic director Nicolas Winding Refn involved at different times.

But Sony has no moratorium on development with Sweeney – it also has struck a deal to be part of an adaptation of Marcus Kliewer’s short story The Guardian for Universal.

The king’s manKarl Gajdusek is working on the script for the film, which will follow a young woman who accepts a job as a janitor from Craigslist and quickly discovers that her responsibilities have far higher (and more dangerous) stakes than she ever could have. to imagine.

Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes team are producing this one, which looks like it could end up on screens before Barbarelle. The next step in terms of release for Sweeney is the crime picture National anthem and spin-off of Spider Madame Webthe latter holding a date of February 16, 2024.
